Silicone Implants vs. Saline Implants

by | May 16, 2017 | Health

Breast augmentation is a surgery that changes the size and shape of the breasts. Using breast implants, the doctor will place these on the chest, under the muscle or tissue. Following are brief descriptions of the types of breast implants available that will help you determine what is right for you.

Silicone

Silicone implants are made from silicone gel. They feel more like a natural breast compared to the other implants out there as it looks like human fat when in the body. They have a silicone shell and come in various sizes. Chicago breast augmentation medical facilities are a safe place to get this type of implant surgically done.

Keep in mind that if a silicone implant were to leak or rupture, treatment might be needed to correct it. Consult your medical professional for proper direction.

To consider silicone implants, you must be 22 years old or older for breast augmentation. You can be a woman of any age for breast reconstruction surgery.

Saline

Saline implants are made from medically sterile salt water. Unlike silicone implants, saline implants are inserted under the chest empty then filled with the saline solution. One of the advantages of a saline implant is when it comes to leaks. If one leak, the implant will fall and the saline solution is naturally absorbed and expelled from the body.

You must be 18 years old or older for breast augmentation and a woman of any age for breast reconstruction.

Cost

Since breast augmentation is considered cosmetic surgery, it isn’t usually covered by insurance. Silicone implants are generally more expensive than saline implants. The cost will vary depending on your location and doctor used, but silicone can be on average $1000 more than saline.

As with any doctor, do your research when considering breast augmentation surgery. Choose a licensed and well-established facility that will meet all of your needs.
