What Causes Sciatica Pain?
This type of pain starts in the lower back and tailbone area and can radiate down one or both legs all the way to the feet in severe cases. The sciatic nerve is one of the largest branching nerves from the spinal cord and starts at the lower back and winds down both legs. The pain comes when this nerve is pinched, damaged, injured, or irritated. It is like kinking a water hose. The messages to and from the brain are messed up and pain is often the result, though numbness and weakness can also occur. Sciatica pain is often worsened by sitting or standing in a certain position, sleeping in a way that doesn’t support the spine, and by bending or lifting.
Ways to Treat Sciatica Pain
Traditional methods for treating this pain usually involved prescription pain killers and therapy to loosen muscles and put the nerves back in their proper place. Surgery is required in severe cases. These methods do correct the pain, but do not offer a safe and long-term solution to the underlying cause of the pain.
